Fruit tree, in its widest sense is the term that refers to any tree that produces fruit (with fruit being taken to be the structures formed by the ripened ovaries of flowers containing one or more seeds). However, as all flowering plants produce fruit, fruit trees are limited in horticultural usage to those that provide fruit that can be eaten by humans. This definition also includes the trees that produce nuts.
